For years, the Jane family has been one of the most influential cow families in CRV’s breeding program. Several current InSire bulls trace their bloodlines back to foundation cow Groenibo Stellando Jane from the Borst-Beemsterboer family farm in Heerhugowaard (The Netherlands). She was the dam of Groenibo Bram and produced nearly 110,000 kg of milk during her lifetime, with 4.44% fat and 3.54% protein. “Stellando Jane was smaller than average but strongly built. She was a powerhouse, a trouble free farmer’s cow with strong legs and a highly functional udder. The Janes are persistent, high-producing grazing cows, and Stellando Jane fit that picture perfectly,” breeder Sjon Borst once said about her.

The Janes

The Janes continue to pass on their qualities generation after generation. At the CRV test farm run by the Nooijen family in Coevorden, three promising great-greatgranddaughters entered production, including Delta Judele P (by Jawline PP), the dam of InSire bull Delta Tallon. She had an excellent start to her first lactation and quickly reached a production level of 35 kg of milk with 3.70% protein. Unfortunately, she died in an accident before she could be classified.

Persistent, trouble-free dairy cows

That Judele possessed exceptional genetics is evident from her son, Delta Tallon P. His breeding values reflect the strengths of the Jane family: breeding strong, low-maintenance, persistently productive dairy cows. InSire bull Tallon P transmits +73 kg of combined fat and protein and scores 107 for feed efficiency. The Panorama PP son also scores 108 for persistency and 108 for late maturity, indicating that his daughters continue to improve in later lactations. Tallon P daughters are of medium stature, with sufficient width in the front end and rump. Their udders are shallow and firmly attached, teat length is average, and rear teats are placed slightly wider than average. Tallon P scores 104 for feet and legs overall, including 105 for locomotion. Calves from bull Tallon P are born easily (breeding value 105 for calving ease), and his daughters are also expected to calve easily themselves (106 for daughter calving ease). He also scores positively for all other health traits, including 106 for somatic cell count, 105 for ketosis resistance, and 105 for daughter fertility.
